On 2
December 1805, the Emperor Napoleon had lured the Allied Army under Czar
Alexander into attacking him in one of the most famous traps in military
history. The Allied army attacked but was split in two by a French
counter-attack and disastrously defeated, giving Napoleon one of the
greatest victories in the history of war –
Austerlitz.
‘Napoleon’s Triumph’ uses many of the same game mechanics as its acclaimed
predecessor, ‘Bonaparte
at Marengo’,
but is bigger and grander in scale. It uses two boards to make a double-size
44" x 34" map of the Austerlitz battlefield and has twice as many pieces as
the earlier game, but defying the tradition that big wargames must also take
a long time to play, Napoleon’s Triumph can be played from start to finish
in a single evening.
‘Napoleon’s Triumph’
comes with 140 wooden blocks to represent cavalry, infantry, and artillery
units, 18 metal flags to represent the senior commanders and their staffs,
and a dozen wooden markers for bookkeeping purposes.
The wooden blocks
are painted either blue or red, to indicate whether the units are French or
Allied and symbols on the pieces indicate their type and strength. The metal
command flags are identified by nationality and name (stickers are provided
for marking up the command pieces).

The use of
three-dimensional wooden blocks allows for convenient simulation of “the fog
of war”, as pieces have their type and strength printed on only one side.
This allows each player to see the type and strength of his own pieces by
facing them towards himself, while leaving the blank sides facing his
opponent.
In order to provide
a better visual representation of nineteenth century linear warfare, the
pieces are not square, but rectangular blocks. Their three-dimensional
design also allows convenient simulation of “the fog of war”, as pieces have
their type and strength printed on only one side, allowing each player only
to see the type and strength of his own playing pieces.
